Why do you come to worship on Sundays? Why do you sing? Why do you give? Why do you read? Why do you pray? What do you speak? What motivates your living? What motivates your godliness? The “why” of our Christianity is the foundation for the “what”! What you do, so often reveals only a partial picture. Why you do something matters to God just as much as the what.
The passage in front of us, addresses this very issue. No one knows us better than our Savior. He knows not only the what but also the why! And only someone who knows us so intimately and thoroughly would warn us about doing the right thing in the sight of men while harboring wrong motives before God.
Theme: Motivation for godly living is not rooted in our pursuit of recognition but in our pleasure of God!
