In chapter 2, Matthew brings to the foreground the Kingship of Christ! He is no other than the promised Messiah who would reign on the throne of David, to whom every knee will bow, whether in this life or the next! Matthew calls us to honor Jesus and worship Him as King! In this text, Matthew contrasts two responses towards the birth of Christ. The enthusiasm of the Gentiles to worship, with the apathy of God’s people towards worship; the willingness of the Gentiles to act on the evidence available to them and fall down and worship the Child, with the murderous plot of Herod to try to get rid of the child!
The point that Matthew makes is that King Jesus is controversial! Because He’s the king, He makes all the other so-called kings tremble and oppose His rule!
